I can hardly believe that we are already at the end of 2014 and one third of the way through the school year. I would like to take a moment to highlight some of the great things that have been going on at SMS and let you know about some upcoming events in the New Year.
Our band and chorus students just finished up a series of events in December, including a visit to the WTKR studios where they performed live during the evening news. This program is scheduled to be re-broadcast on Christmas day, so tune in to catch some great vocal performances.
Our students participated in the first SMS S.T.E.M. fest (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). There was a great variety of high-level scientific investigation going on. A district level STEM Fest Showcase will take place in early January.
The Falcons and the Hawks both took field trips to Washington DC, and all three eighth grade teams visited Jefferson Labs in Newport News.
In seventh grade, the Dolphins visited the Virginia Aquarium and the Stingrays went to Wells Theater to see a play.
Our Holly Ball was a great success and all of the students looked great. Congratulations to our King (Derick Holmes), Queen (Beyonce Rowell), Prince (Eddie Cantwell) and Princess (Shannon Tucker). We have another dance coming up in February.
Our marching band, majorette and flag team, JOOI club, and Holly Ball Court all looked and sounded great during the Smithfield Parade.
Our PTA fundraiser was a great success, and all students who qualified had a great time at the Big Blast Party. Please be on the lookout for more information about our next fundraiser coming in spring.
Congratulations to Reide Petty, our SMS Spelling Bee Champion! Reide will go on to compete in the Virginian-Pilot Regional Spelling Bee in January.
Many of our eighth graders continue to participate in JV sports for the SHS Packers. Basketball, Cheerleading, Swimming, and Wrestling are now all underway.
I hope everyone has a happy and restful winter break, and students are ready to come back strong on January 5th, 2015!
Happy Holidays, Go Panthers, and see you all in 2015!
