Isle of Wight County Schools (IWCS) is celebrating outstanding results from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), with all nine schools earning full accreditation and five receiving the state's highest performance designation, Distinguished.
The results from Virginia's School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF) for the 2026–2027 accountability year highlight strong performance and continued progress across the division:
- Five of nine schools earned the Distinguished designation, while four received Meets Expectations.
- Eight of nine schools increased their overall framework scores from the previous year.
- Six of nine schools maintained or improved their performance category compared to last year.
- IWCS was one of only three school divisions in Superintendent's Region 2 with no schools designated Approaching Expectations or Needs Intensive Support, the state's two lowest performance categories.
The five schools receiving Distinguished designations are:
- Carrsville Elementary School
- Westside Elementary School
- Georgie D. Tyler Middle School
- Smithfield Middle School
- Windsor High School
Hardy Elementary School demonstrated significant progress, improving from last year's Off Track designation to Meets Expectations. Windsor High School once again earned the Distinguished designation, achieving an overall framework score of 99.3, the highest in the division. Georgie D. Tyler Middle School and Smithfield Middle School were both recognized among the top five middle schools in VDOE Superintendent's Region 2 for Advanced Coursework. This recognition reflects the schools' success in providing students with opportunities to pursue rigorous coursework, particularly through enrollment in Algebra I during middle school.
Virginia's School Performance and Support Framework evaluates schools using measures of academic achievement, student growth, readiness, and graduation, as applicable. Notably, all nine IWCS schools earned overall framework scores of 90 or higher, placing them within the Distinguished scoring range. However, four schools—Carrollton Elementary, Hardy Elementary, Windsor Elementary, and Smithfield High School—received final designations of Meets Expectations due to federal Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) identifications related to the performance of students with disabilities. Under the state's accountability requirements, a federal identification lowers a school's final performance category by one level, even when its overall framework score qualifies for Distinguished status.
IWCS remains committed to supporting the academic success of every student, including addressing performance gaps among student groups. These results reflect the dedication of IWCS students, teachers, administrators, support staff, and families. The division celebrates these accomplishments while remaining focused on continuous improvement and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.
