SHS connects with SMS....sharing GREAT ideas!

Mrs. Geromin's AP Government seniors came to speak to Mrs. Dillingham's 8th grade students about social issues. The SMS students will have the opportunity to reflect on their own interests and answer the question,What would you fight for? They will think of an issue that they care about and want to see changed in our school, community, or world. Students then will write and design their own magazine articles for a team magazine, implement an action plan related to their topic, and shared their learning at an expo they plan.

IWCS Planning Survey - Deadline: February 20

Isle of Wight County Schools is seeking input from the community to assist with the development of a long range facility plan for the division. A survey is available to all parents, employees and community members in order to gather input that will help the division develop a long range plan for facilities. The questions in the survey are similar to the questions shared during the February 5 and February 12 community input meetings. If you attended one of the meetings, we encourage you to still complete the survey. The survey will close on Tuesday, February 20 at 11:55 pm.

Ms. Tripp's Hawks launch PBL project: A Hero in my Eyes

Ms. Tripp’s student selected someone that is a hero in his or her life and will then interview his or her chosen person. Several local heroes came in to talk to the students, and the students had the chance to interview each of them. Thank you to Mr. Bill Constant (8th grade Math/Algebra teacher at SMS and Navy veteran), Mrs. Ellen Peterson (7th grade Science teacher at SMS), Officer Paul Krohn, (IOW Police Department), Mrs. Jo Ann Qualls (Chorus teacher at SMS), LTC Peter Badoian (JROTC instructor at SHS), Mr. John Fitzgerald (Retired US Navy Corpsman, father, and husband) and Mrs. Gay Reilly (Marathon runner, retired teacher). JROTC Cadets - Community Service

Colonial Badoian and his cadets from Smithfield High School visited each Civics class at SMS to talk about the upcoming blood drive at SHS. The cadets talked about the importance of giving blood as a contributing citizen of the community. In addition, 8th grade students learned about various reasons that would motivate an individual to give blood. Life Lessons for 8th graders at Smithfield Middle School

Jeff Orrock, Meteorologist from NOAA, spoke to 8th grade students about hurricanes. Students learned about the damage that different wind speeds produce. He also showed video and pictures of devastation that hurricanes leave behind. Andrea Clontz, Emergency Management Coordinator for Isle of Wight, and Betty Entsminger, Coordinator of Safety/Security/ Crisis Management for Isle of Wight schools, also addressed the students. Clontz taught the students how Isle of Wight handles emergencies and disaster preparedness. Entsminger spoke on how she readies the schools as emergency shelters. SMS is very appreciative to Orrock, Clontz, and Entsminger for giving up their time to teach our students.
